'I joined the 1st Battalion Grenedier Guards in 1970. Whilst on exercise in Kenya, I contracted Betchais Syndrome, which is a rare blood disorder with Thrombosis, and this resulted in me nearly dieing. Because to this, I became disabled in 1976. In 1999, I had the pleasure of joining BEWSA and was able to go on my first trip to the USA, competing in the PVA games in Puerto Rico. I compete in Basketball, Softball, Rifle shooting, Javelin and Discus. I also learned to dive with BEWSA, and I became only the 5th disabled person to qualify as a PADI Rescue Diver! One of my roles in the PVA games, is to be a mentor to the "Disabled Children of America". I get immense personal satisfaction and pride from this role.'

'I served in the Royal Navy for 8 years, until injuring my spine in 1986. The resultant extent of my injuries, meant I had to become a full time wheelchair user in my early 20's. In 1991, I discovered BEWSA. Participating in wheelchair sports, has helped me get back into the mainstream again. I have enjoyed sporting success as well as developing lifelong friendships.'

'I am an ex member of the Royal Air Force and suffered a Spinal Injury in 1990 during the build up to the First Gulf War. After surgery and a few years of rehabilitation at RAF Headley Court, I was medically discharged in 1993. Although, as yet, I am not a full time wheel chair user, it's only recently, since finding out about and joining BEWSA, that I have been able to partake in any sport. I really am enjoying the chance to get and keep fit, the camaraderie and support is wonderful. I'm also having the chance to fulfill a life long ambition, learning to SCUBA dive! I would encourage anyone who has served in the Military, but now finds, through injury, that playing normal sports is impossible, to get in touch and join us. I'm sure you'll love it! I have a fundraising page for BEWSA, if you'd like to sponsor me, please click on my picture. Thanks.'
